PROFILE OF A LEADING COMPANY IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Mastering Water Through Precision Engineering and Design
Within the contemporary built environment, the quality of a sanitary system is no longer measured solely by performance at the point of use. It is increasingly defined by what happens behind the wall, beneath the floor and within the broader infrastructure of a building. Few companies have shaped this invisible yet essential layer of architecture as profoundly as Geberit.
Operating globally and with a strong presence in South Africa, Geberit has become synonymous with sanitary technology that combines engineering precision, durability and refined design. For architects, interior designers and engineers, the brand represents a systems-based approach to water management in buildings that integrates installation, flushing, drainage and bathroom ceramics into a cohesive whole.
A Legacy Rooted in Innovation Geberit’ s origins date back to 1874 in Rapperswil in Switzerland, where founder Caspar Melchior Gebert established a small plumbing workshop. What began as a modest family business evolved steadily through a series of technological milestones that would ultimately redefine modern sanitary systems.
Early breakthroughs included the development of the leadlined wooden cistern in 1905 followed decades later by the first all-plastic cistern in 1952. The introduction of the concealed cistern in 1964 marked a turning point in bathroom design, enabling architectural freedom by removing visible plumbing components from the user’ s field of view. This innovation fundamentally altered the relationship between architecture and sanitation, allowing walls to become active technical zones rather than merely structural boundaries.
Today, Geberit operates as a European market leader in sanitary products with a presence in more than 50 countries, over 11,000 employees and a manufacturing network spanning 26 production facilities globally. The company’ s long-standing ethos is encapsulated in its guiding principle“ Mastering Water”, a phrase that reflects its deep technical understanding of water flow within buildings and its commitment to controlling it efficiently and safely.
