Klay’ s Craft and Innovation Klay’ s story is closely intertwined with the evolution of clay masonry in South Africa. Over the years, Klay has built its name through producing clay bricks and tiles that balance strength and enduring visual appeal. Their screen block range represents a natural extension of their expertise.
Unlike many synthetic alternatives, Klay’ s screen blocks retain the warmth, tonal variation and fine surface texture that only fired clay can provide. The material ages gracefully with their vibrant colour fired into the clay for lasting saturation. Weathering enhances rather than diminishes its character. Each piece in the Klay screen block range is carefully engineered and the result is a product that performs as confidently as it presents.
Bendehuis: History Framed in Clay The new Bendehuis development by Atterbury Property offers a thoughtful context for this material language. Located in the Old East Precinct, the project is anchored by a preserved farm house whose story lends the development its name.
According to local lore, a group of young girls once used the old home as the midpoint of their cycling route. It became their informal clubhouse, affectionately known as their‘ bendehuis’. In retaining and restoring this structure, Atterbury embedded the spirit of gathering and convergence into the new commercial environment.
The development spans 4,263m 2 and houses a range of forward looking tenants, including BetterHome Group, Chrome Traders and pHformula. Yet despite its contemporary programme, the project is marked by a clear commitment to conservation. Mature Acacia and Jacaranda trees on the site were carefully integrated into the design. Protective barriers and specialised construction guidelines ensured minimal root disturbance. Circulation routes and built form were adjusted to accommodate branches and canopy spread.
Another defining feature of the building is its façade, which is lined with over 15, 000 Klay screen blocks. The patterned walls provide visual rhythm, filter natural light and encourage airflow, turning the exterior into both a sculptural statement and a functional element of the building’ s environmental strategy.
