PROFILE OF A LEADING SOUTH-AFRICAN PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Creating Spaces that Matter

“ Great architecture isn’ t measured by how it looks, but by what it enables. At SVA, our goal is simple: to create spaces that matter.”

For more than eighty years, SVA, the practice long known as Stauch Vorster Architects, has helped shape the story of Africa’ s cities. Founded in 1943, the practice has grown from a technically rigorous architectural studio into one of the continent’ s most established design firms, defined not only by its buildings, but by its clarity of thinking, commitment to place and enduring craft.

The firm was established by architect Hellmut Stauch, whose education in Berlin exposed him to the ideas of the Bauhaus and the Modern Movement. Those early influences instilled a culture of clarity, purpose and technical rigour that continues to guide the practice today.
Over the decades, as African cities expanded and development became increasingly complex, SVA evolved alongside them. What began as a focused architectural practice gradually expanded its reach across multiple sectors and geographies, delivering projects that range from major retail and mixed-use developments to healthcare facilities, education campuses, hospitality destinations and civic infrastructure.
Today, SVA operates across Southern and East Africa through studios in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Gqeberha, delivering projects that respond thoughtfully to place while navigating the technical and organisational complexity of contemporary development. Across all of this work, the guiding philosophy remains constant: architecture should create spaces that matter, spaces that support communities, strengthen economies and endure over time.
