to take into account BP ’ s commitment to remain in the central city , to contribute to urban renewal and meet the criteria of good access to public transport , shopping amenities , a good microclimate , aspect and views It was also to reflect the BP Culture and its core values by incorporating Higher Ground Leadership and Health Safety and Environment Principles .
After evaluating some 27 sites submitted by developers , only two were in line with the selection criteria . Another two sites were identified and the Portswood site in the V & A Waterfront was finally chosen .
The Competition Brief The brief called for a low-rise campus type sustainable building set in a green environment with inspirational open-plan office space .
Finding an architect who would have not only have a very strong sense of design but , in particular , an understanding of what is sustainable architecture and the environmental impact a building has on its site , was seen as pivotal to the success of the project . 11 local practices were approached and on the basis of a questionnaire and interview a shortlist of 6 firms were invited to participate in an architectural ideas competition .
KrugerRoos Architects & Urban Designers won the competition with specialist environmental contribution by Green by Design Architects .
Consultant Team To comply with BEE targets KrugerRoos Architects and Urban Designers entered into association with Joshua Conrad Architects . The consultant team was selected for their specific knowledge and experience with the sustainability aspects of the project and in line with BP ’ s and the V & A Waterfront ’ s Targeted Procurement Policy , Black Economic Empowerment and Participation of Affirmable Business Enterprises policies .
Site Development Plan The winning scheme satisfied the Development Framework Plan for Portswood Ridge and was sympathetic to the historical context , particularly the Victorian villas . Due to slave grave findings during excavations in the area , an Archaeological
