A magazine cover primarily indicates the content of the magazine to the reader and sets the tone for its brand . Architect and Builder has changed the design of its cover three times since 2000 and every time we do so it represents the results of much thought and many rejected potential designs .

The current mast design saw us paring the cover down to the basics – a simplified font on a white background and a single image . The choice of image is left for me to decide upon and the decision making process varies from issue to issue . Sometimes the choice is obvious and on other occasions it can take hours to decide on the best image . The decision is based not on which project is most prominent that issue , nor is it based on pressure from an architect , developer or advertiser , although they do often try ! The decision is based solely on which image will make the most impactful cover from an aesthetic and architectural perspective . Even then I can ’ t always chose the image I feel is the strongest as I am limited by the dimensions of the cover and not every shot is suitable . If you would like your project to stand a chance of making the cover ensure your photographer is aware of what our requirements are before the shoot . For the projects that make the cover , what I enjoy most are the developers and team seeing the building they have toiled over for years finally shown in all its glory .
In this issue the projects include : BCX Head Office in Centurion . Custom designed for the client , this imposing 36,000m 2 building provides a modern working environment for the BCX staff .
The Green Building at Karl Bremer Hospital in Cape Town was developed by the Western Cape Government with a strong emphasis on sustainability and has been awarded a 5-star Greenstar rating .
Central Square forms the heart of the Menlyn Maine precinct and as the name suggests , the central piazza provides a dynamic public space surrounded by many retail and restaurant options .
Overlooking Central Square is The Capital at Menlyn Maine . A new development by The Capital Hotel Group , the hotel offers contemporary , suite-style accommodation in the heart of Menlyn Maine .
The Warwick in Green Point is a striking modern apartment building that has retained the original ‘ mansion block ’ alongside it in a nod to the heritage of the area .
A project from Paragon Interiors has again been chosen for its work on The MediaShop office interiors .
