This steeply sloping corner site
located at the base of Table
Mountain just above the City
Bowl, is nestled in a mix of 4 and 5
storey apartment blocks, as well as
smaller single residential Victorian
houses.
The
architects,
Objek,
felt that the best way to address
the slope and the varied context
was to create a contemporary
expression of the traditional ‘Row
House’ in the form of four semi-
detached units.
Each of the 4 units comprises five
levels, the lowest three of which,
make
up
the
street
accessed
‘houses’. Objek sought to promote
a more engaging and active street
edge – an urban design response
the
architects
feel
is
sorely
missing in many newer buildings
in the area. The top two levels are
large loft apartments accessed
from the mountain facing side
of the building. The stepping of
the units down the slope created
an undulating roof scape that
allowed for skylights to each of
the mezzanine levels to frame a
perfect picture view of Signal Hill.

LOFTUS PARK MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT
Designed by Studio 3 Design House,
the construction of the R1,2 billion Loftus
Park mixed-use development by Abland,
north of the historic Loftus Versveld
Stadium in Pretoria, is on track for
completion in early 2018.
The development will include an open
air piazza with fountains and artwork
surrounded by restaurants, a microbrewery
and a small selection of retail outlets
focused on sportswear and equipment.
It will also have a sports rehabilitation
facility, and a large commercial component
providing office space, a hotel, gym and
upmarket grocery and deli chain store.
The old tennis clubhouse on the site
known as the Sinbin, protected in terms
of heritage legislations, will be restored
and incorporated into the Loftus Park
development. To pay homage to the
enormous role sport has played in South
Africa, an exhibition centre will be at the
heart of the development. Designed in the
shape of a rugby ball, an iconic symbol of
South African sporting pride, the centre will
give visitors a taste of history, bringing past
and present sporting achievements to life
with excellent displays and mini exhibitions.
The exhibition centre will also host the
“players club” and exquisite artefact bou-
tique, as well as a coffee shop, ensuring
Loftus Park is a landmark of excellence.
The Loftus Park precinct will be the
first Green Building Council of South
Africa (GBCSA) Green Star rated precinct
in South Africa. Once completed, Loftus
Park will be the first and only commercial
development integrated with a major
sporting facility to provide comprehensive
hotel, office and retail opportunities for
South Africa’s sports fraternity.
