The building is primarily constructed with load-bearing brickwork , with concrete lintels providing sun shading on the northern façades to reduce heat gain . The façade features facebrick , complemented by plastered brickwork as an economical infill . Windows are centrally placed in each bedroom , framed by vertical fins , creating a rhythmic pattern across the elevation . The staggered placement of detailed facebrick walls and solid walls between floors adds visual interest .
The roof features different angles on each side : to the north , a 20 º pitch can accommodate solar panels , while the south roof is pitched at 45 º, creating an interesting dynamic on the gable
ends and enhancing the overall visual appeal of the building . Steel roofing , paired with steel-clad façades , contributes to the industrial aesthetic , while horizontal fluted cladding softens the vertical visual impact .
Sustainability In keeping with Kanton ’ s commitment to sustainability , Sol-Tech Plaashuis incorporates environmentally conscious design principles . The building uses thermal mass in its walls to regulate indoor temperatures naturally , while strategically placed overhangs and cross-ventilation systems reduce the need for artificial climate control , thereby promoting energy efficiency . Solar installations are planned for the roof , and borehole water is utilised for toilets and irrigation , further minimising environmental impact .
Finishes The building ’ s colour scheme is dominated by the in-situ grey concrete and paint , contrasted with red facebrick and dark grey steel cladding , creating a harmonious and ordered pattern . All materials are locally sourced , including red brick , concrete stone , and sand from nearby quarries , and glass and aluminium from regional suppliers , ensuring a strong connection to the local environment .
Site and Access The site benefits from several advantageous conditions that shaped the planning of the development . Its gentle northward slope allows for efficient positioning of the buildings along natural contour lines , minimising earthworks and enhancing the site ’ s drainage . Being landlocked ,
