Student Centre ( otherwise known as the “ Neelsie ”), which was previously used as a parking area . The site was ideal due to its central location next to a significant student social centre , and the importance of this pedestrian node as a junction between the northern and main campus . Although the site presented some complex challenges , these parameters were met with successful design resolutions .
The historical setting of Stellenbosch University ’ s Central Campus and its surrounding Stellenbosch Town context triggered intricate heritage guidelines and called for an innovative architectural approach .
The architectural vision was to create a building that sits gracefully and dynamically within its unique environment , providing interactive social spaces to support various academic activities .
The JMLC ’ s strategic location within the main academic campus ensures ease of access from all the surrounding Academic Faculties , Departments and Support Infrastructure . The centralised position of the facilities supports the creation of a walkable campus environment and improves pedestrian mobility and accessibility , key elements in Stellenbosch University ’ s Integrated Campus Spatial Development Framework 2020-2035 .
