THE PLETT QUARTER , PLETTENBERG BAY
The Plett Quarter is a mixed-use development in the heart of Plettenberg Bay , establishing itself as the gateway from its location at the top of Main Street and Strand Street , and comprises hotel , residential , dining , retail , and lifestyle facilities . While contemporary in its aesthetic , lead architect , Mario Bonadei , from Bonadei Architects Conceptworks , sensitively incorporates the heritage of the existing façade – originally the first pump station and car showroom on Main Street – and harmoniously integrates with the established horizontal and open nature of the façades prevalent of the CBD . Progressing the existing urban character of active frontages , the project is designed to integrate and engage with the pedestrian-friendly Main Street , enhancing the sidewalk with an eclectic shopping experience , hotel dining , and a private restaurant opening onto the Main Street thoroughfare .
The portal entrance is receded from this street edge and forms a gradual procession as one moves from the street to the sidewalk , up to the porch and into the open lobby – a transition materially and spatially enhanced with indigenous planting , lighting , level changes , and natural textures .
Once inside , guests and residents will discover that the building is composed of two wings arranged along a linear courtyard and connected to one another via a series of staircases , open-air walkways , and bridges . Open to the sky , the courtyard is planted with indigenous trees and shrubs , and features timber accents – all of which create a dappled environment reminiscent of the forested landscape surrounding the town .
Fronting the active street edge , the west wing houses the lobby , hotel restaurant , conference facilities , a day-spa , and hotel suites – some enjoying balconies which engage with the heritage façade , thus creating distinctive viewing windows of the bustling street below .
Crossing the bridges to the east wing , the residential units and more hotel rooms are orientated towards the ocean and sunrise . A minimal colour palette of whites and greys , enhanced with accents of timber and stone texture , ensures that nothing detracts from the spectacular ocean views and eastern light which can be enjoyed from the living spaces , bedrooms , and generous balconies .
