Bridge City Shopping Centre
REFURBISHMENT AWARD
Bridge City Shopping Centre was reconstructed , following the devastation of the July 2021 riots , to create a dominant superior regional centre and to further enhance and integrate the transport nodes around the centre . The tenant mix was actively enhanced to increase footfall to the centre and to create local employment opportunities . A key emphasis was placed on the use of local service providers to support local communities through employment . Quality , affordable health care facilities have been incorporated as well as ongoing CSI projects implemented to further uplift the local communities .
The aesthetic concept was inspired by Bridge City ’ s location and use as a transport hub in KwaMashu , where retail intersects with transport in the form of a train station and the newly developed taxi rank . The design had to marry these different uses into a coherent and effective space for the public . Railway sleeper and track conceptual details are prominent in the ceilings and floor tile design throughout the shopping centre . Contemporary cool grey and white tones provide a timeless colour palette , combined with the double volumes in the building that create a light and airy feel .
The main entrance to the shopping centre from the train station is located on the ground level and the newly established taxi rank provides commuters with convenient access directly into the shopping centre . The access to the train station through the mall creates an intersection between commuters and shoppers whereby both uses can feed off each other . The expansive roof top provides ample parking for customers travelling via private vehicles . The establishment of fashion nodes , a banking hall on the upper level and a food court on the lower level has resulted in an improved shopper experience .
The most technically advanced energy efficient solutions were implemented including an energy efficient ventilation and chilled air conditioning unit with a heat recycling capability , and power factor correction systems . The use of natural light was a priority in the redevelopment and energy efficient bulbs were used where lighting was required .
