When it comes to architectural photography , how do you work and what do you feel makes a great image ? I love capturing the essence of a space and therefore I work mostly with natural or ambient light attempting to convey the feeling and experience of actually being in that building or room . I pay close attention to all the details in each frame , from the lighting , to the lines and composition and I believe in taking the time to create quality images instead of a large quantity . I like to work closely with my clients as part of a creative team because I believe that they have expert insight into the finer details of the project which allows me to focus on the most important elements in each scene .
What is your favourite building you shot and why ? That is a tough question to answer - I have seen so many amazing projects over the years that it is hard to chose just one . Perhaps one of the most interesting and memorable projects wasn ’ t a building as such but instead the large structure of a telescope that I got to photograph as part of the Square Kilometre Array project . It was such a unique experience being out in the Karoo far from any towns , photographing this giant
telescope during the heat of the day and then again in the darkness of night in order to capture it ’ s relationship to the desert surroundings and the night sky while at the same time wondering if there were any creepy crawlies near my feet as I stood outside in the open darkness .
What should architects consider when working with a photographer to ensure quality pics ? I feel it is essential for the architects or designers to be on site on the day of the shoot . The best photographic results occur when working side by side . Having the insight and knowledge regarding the project can be the key to capturing the most important aspects of that project . I also think it is important not to try rush through the spaces trying to capture everything and rather allow the photographer to take the time to capture the building in its best light and at the right times of the day .
