ALPLA
INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD
ALPLA South Africa ’ s new home is an amalgamation of all five existing facilities scattered around South Africa under one structure on one site . The project consists of a total of 34,616m 2 office , factory and warehouse built for the manufacture and distribution of plastic packaging products . The structure creates a streamlined process in plastic production and has the ability to increase in size as the demand rises , allowing for growth and development of ALPLA .
The company acknowledges the impact of the plastic industry on the world and attempts were made to reduce this impact overall . The facility aims to operate within the global sustainability standards for plastic manufacture by reducing overall water wastage through the use of a closed loop cooling system , zero pellet loss when offloading materials and by also incorporating a reduced energy usage with a 3.8mw solar plant . The remaining undeveloped land has been landscaped accordingly , including a grey water system linked to the irrigation system supplied by the estate . These measures were used to reduce ALPLA ’ s carbon footprint overall .
This new facility has helped to create new local employment opportunities within Lanseria and surrounding areas , throughout the construction process to temporary and permanent employment . A level 1 BBBEE standard has been achieved . A training centre promotes growth and development of the staff to keep them up to date with the standards required by the tenant globally .
The design of the building was developed for the tenant , taking into account their production and manufacturing requirements . The design is a complex linear structure with a central spine passage incorporated to promote linear movement for pedestrians and machines alike through the production floor plates as one approaches the warehouse . This passage also acts as a central reticulation area for the resin feeder system from the central storage location and the closed loop cooled water system . A walkway above the production area allows for supervision and provides potential clients a bird ’ s eye view of the facility in operation .
The facility is a bespoke solution for the clients brief , accommodating many different programs internally and externally . These include a chilled water plant , material stores and the transformer room . Externally there are a flammable and hazardous goods store , boiler room and gas manifolds . Due to the complexity of the tenant ’ s requirements the design was programmed to be a seamless operation throughout .
