The hectic last few weeks of the construction year are upon us . The manic rush to wind down sites is at least made easier by the knowledge that a long break awaits everyone in the industry .

I suppose it ’ s necessary to do the obligatory look back over the year . Any year would be better than the two years of Covid hell , but I think it was a year of consolidation , being thankful that our firms survived the Pandemic and feeling a little excited when new work starts coming in and we start getting busier again .

Many architects have started seeing projects come in and even if these are different in nature and scale to what they might have worked on a few years ago , work is work and there ’ s an opportunity to get creative in other commercial sectors than purely office building design .

The challenge for many firms as they start to get busier again will be the recruitment of staff to fill the positions left vacant due to retrenchment or emigration . So many in the industry have left SA in the last few years and it has left a bit of a hole both professionally and personally for many of us that feel that loss quite keenly . But onwards and upwards we head into 2023 .
