CONSTITUTION HILL PEOPLE ’ S PARK , BRAAMFONTEIN
Situated directly to the north of the Constitutional Court in Braamfontein , People ’ s Park is an exciting new green space that is envisioned as a public park and events space to host concerts and festivals , such as Afro Punk Joburg and the Louries .
Located at the lower end of the Great African Steps , the park site slopes downwards to the north offering dramatic views across Parktown towards the northern suburbs of Johannesburg . The park is configured as a large flat field - the Assembly Lawn - in the centre of the site geared to accommodating large crowds and events . A series of smaller pockets of space are located around the periphery of the park , each of which are gently inserted into the contours of the site , incorporating sloped
embankments , grassy berms and stepped seating . Drawing upon the language contained in the Constitution , several of these spaces are named after clauses of the Bill of Rights , including the Education Arena , Dignity Corner , Freedom Circle , Environment Garden and Children ’ s Terrace . In contrast to the large open field in the centre of the park , these more intimate spaces accommodate a series of more passive functions such as seating areas , viewpoints , commemorative and educational spaces .
The park is laid out around a curved organic geometry that gently moulds and merges with the existing undulating topography of the site . Curved sloping stone clad walls form the northern and eastern boundary to the park along Sam Hancock Street and Queens Road , drawing formal and material inspiration from the rampart walls of the Old Fort . A pedestrian entrance gate and steps are located at the north-east corner of the site , responding to the movement desire line of pedestrians passing through Constitution Hill to and from Hillbrow .
