GATEWAY THEATRE OF SHOPPING , UMHLANGA RIDGE
Gateway Theatre of Shopping , the East Coast ’ s super regional mall , pushes the boundaries of South African shopping experiences once more thanks to a multi-million-rand refurbishment that will combine leading edge construction with new age design technologies . Head of Retail for Old Mutual Property , Ahmed Kazi , said “ the revitalisation of the mega mall which has been something of a trailblazer in the local
retail space since it launched 21
years ago , would give the centre a whole new design aesthetic .” The two-phase upgrade begins with the transformation of the Great Hall around Gateway ’ s entrance axis . This will be followed by the rejuvenation of the centre ’ s two adjacent vaulted wings . Phase one includes a glamorous triple-volume faceted glass façade around the main lifts , a new geometric tiling design and striking curved organic ceiling bulkheads that will unite to create a new age elegance with sweeping lines and timber accents . General Manager for Gateway , Feysel Potgieter , said that work has commenced on the first phase but would pause for the festive season . Phase two , which will focus on the adjacent wings , will be completed in 2023 . Gateway is currently one of the top 100 largest malls in the world and the third largest in South Africa . The shopping complex – which will not be extended during this latest upgrade – measures over 176,000m 2 .
THE ROSE ON 117 , CAPE TOWN
Developed by Signatura and designed by Cape Town firm , Fabian Architects , The Rose on 117 provides an opportunity to replace a derelict and featureless light industrial building with an edifice that injects an exuberant energy into the streetscape . It also plays an important mediating role between the monolithic glass modernism of 117 on Strand and the ornate façade of the neighbouring nineteenth century heritage building on the corner of Rose and Strand Streets .
‘’ The Rose is on a landmark site in the heart of our city at a node where the colourful built environment of the Bo-Kaap meets the CBD ,” commented lead architect Lauren Bolus . “ In this architecturally sensitive transitional area , we wanted to create a building that encourages curiosity , explores playfulness and activates this city node ”.
Bolus goes on to say , “ The architecture seeks to encourage hope and optimism through a colourful aluminium façade grid , presented in shades of pink that are a nod to the site ’ s location on Rose Street and the colourful houses of the neighbourhood . This playful grid highlights vertical cores and creates elements of interest , rhythm and colour .’’
The Rose on 117 is ideally located at the edge of De Waterkant and the CBD , on the northern fringe of the Bo-Kaap . This transitional setting lends itself to a lifestyle of fun and cultural exploration , and makes for a perfect base for travellers .
The Rose on 117 consists of 61 fully furnished apartments , with interiors by Weylandts Studio , offering an incredible suite of lifestyle attractions – gym , restaurants , shops and a rooftop pool with breathtaking mountain views . The ground floor of the building will host coffee shops and a restaurant while the rooftop pool deck is the crowning glory of the building .
