MAJOR URBAN RENEWAL UNDERWAY IN MAITLAND
A major urban renewal project is currently underway in Maitland ’ s south-western node , at the gateway to the City of Cape Town ’ s Voortrekker Road development corridor . The project is designed to unlock the potential of this strategically important area , just five kilometres from the centre of the CBD , through the delivery of significant new inclusionary housing and job-creating commercial developments .
Construction has been completed on the first of seven new buildings , which will collectively deliver more than 50,000m 2 of mixed-use development bulk and add at least 1,200 residential opportunities aimed at low to middle income households .
The first of these developments , The Prime , is a 143-apartment building which is now fully let . A second major development in the precinct , Maitland Mews , is currently under construction . This R93-million social housing project will deliver an additional 204 affordable rental units , with a scheduled completion date of January 2023 .
The initiative , branded as Maitland Metro , is being spearheaded by BlueBluck Projects , in cooperation with national and local government authorities , and in collaboration with Madulammoho Housing Association and The Maitland City Improvement District .
