ground conditions added to the complexity . The roof height of the De Beers building served as a further visual guide limiting the maximum height due to the heritage significance of this structure . The high-volume teaching spaces and overall height of the JMLC had to be sensitively accommodated within these parameters .
A Sustainable Campus In support of a walkable campus , and encouraging the use of non-motorised transport for circulation on campus , the Learning Centre has a low-carbon footprint and allocated peripheral parking areas encourage non-motorised transport on campus , with appropriate bicycle storage facilities and busshuttle nodes nearby .
The central location serves as an initial catalyst for the proposed district cooling design affecting both De Beers and the Langenhoven Student Centre . The facility is also ready to incorporate a photovoltaic installation that can be integrated into the current and future infrastructure .
General electrical precinct upgrades , serving this central campus node , are included in the project , and the water supply ties in from the Campus grey water system . Rainwater is stored in redundant space that was created by the extensive excavations , and systems are efficiently managed to preserve energy and water usage .
Prof Stan du Plessis , Chief Operating Officer at Stellenbosch University says , “ The new centre sets the benchmark for future development of buildings on campus . The learning spaces were specifically designed to cater for the modern pedagogies developed around interactive and hybrid learning .
The classrooms and auditorium are equipped with state-of-the-art Smart technology , which will furthermore “ enable students to be connected to cyberspace seamlessly ,” and add to an improved learning environment .”
The centre boasts an atrium and terraced seating that creates light and flow , providing a welcoming place for students as they tackle the latest theories and concepts . Group-work classrooms provide the flexibility for lecturers and students to adapt their environment and facilitate discussion and teamwork .
The Department of Higher Education and Training contributed funding to the project but the building was made possible through a generous donation by the Jannie Mouton Foundation in honour of Jan Mouton Snr . The facility is intended to spur students to greater heights , lifelong learning and engaged citizenship .
