Stellenbosch University is one of South Africa ’ s leading research-based universities and home to approximately 31,000 students . Growth in student numbers over the last decade , together with changing pedagogical models , necessitated an expansion of the existing teaching facilities . Technological advances called for adequately equipped spaces for e-learning , group work , and ‘ bringing your own device ’. With this point of departure , the Jan Mouton Learning Centre ( JMLC ) has been designed as a contemporary multifunctional facility on the central campus , and all faculties share this space .
Prof Wim de Villiers , Stellenbosch University Rector , Vice-Chancellor , said , “ It is our vision to be a university that is responsive to the learning experience of a technologically-equipped student body as well as the changing needs of the society in which they operate . To this end , we need well-equipped buildings in which excellent learning and teaching can take place . We need smart buildings , green buildings , buildings of the future . Personal interaction between lecturer and student as well as between students from different backgrounds remains essential when it comes to learning together and from one another . And for that , one needs suitable buildings . In its design , tools and technology , the Jan Mouton Learning Centre will be a contemporary space with a low carbon footprint that is more accessible to a growing student body that has varied goals and requirements .”
The architectural vision was to create a building that sits gracefully and dynamically within its unique environment , providing interactive social spaces to support various academic activities
