The Tabernacle thinkspace was also entrusted with the revitalisation of The Tabernacle , Distell ’ s underground rare wine library . The objective
was to give the space a fresh new look while still honouring its heritage and the product it represents .
Built in the mid-1970s , The Tabernacle has a capacity for over 20,000 bottles and is today an irreplaceable library of South African wine stretching back almost a century . The Tabernacle was set up as a wine library , to examine how South African wine evolves as it ages . The thousands of bottles are stored here under ideal ageing conditions . The collection also includes bottles of the rare Vin de Constance dating back to 1821 , various wines from the 1920s as well as all the other decades of the 20th century . More recently , other age-worthy reds from the 21st century have been finding their way into the Tabernacle .
