DSC Centre is a five storey triangular building with a central courtyard with a focus on the use of natural materials
The DSC Centre in Kimberley is one of the most contemporary developments in the city and its prominent position has been a draw card for a number of diverse tenants .
The building was designed by Makespace Architects who had previously worked for the client on the development of another commercial property in Kimberley . The client subsequently purchased vacant land of approximately 7,000m 2 next to that property in a prominent position in Memorial Road , opposite the North Cape Mall . After consideration the developer decided against a single tenant option and briefed the architects on a multi tenanted commercial office development with maximum coverage and density on the site .
The Design The challenge was the west facing triangular shaped site . A west facing property , especially in the harsh Northern Cape climate , receives direct sunlight for eight months of the year and with this being the main street facing façade it proved challenging from a design perspective . The building also had to be designed to accommodate multiple tenants that were as yet confirmed . The design thus had to be adaptable for a variety of future tenant requirements with good street exposure , whilst also addressing the climactic challenges of the northern orientation .
