DESIGN QUARTER , FOURWAYS
A refurbishment by MDS Architecture is set to breathe new life into Design Quarter in Fourways , Sandton . Set on a prominent site along William Nicol Drive , the intention when Design Quarter opened over 17 years ago was to create a hub for design and interiors concentrated in one convenient and sophisticated location .
Developers Investec Property Management acquired Design Quarter in 2015 , which offers 19,800m 2 GLA ( Retail ) and 23,000m 2 GLA . Says Sean Pearce , partner at MDS Architecture , “ The trend towards home improvement gained traction during the Covid-19 lockdowns , providing the perfect context in which to revisit the roots of this landmark building .”
The reconfiguration will see the creation of a food street – a restaurant area – in the structure previously occupied by Woolworths . The double volume industrial design concept creates a buzzing indoor food area which spills out onto an outdoor piazza at one end of the shopping centre , blurring the lines between the indoor and outdoor areas using clear stacking and folding doors .
Restaurants currently situated on the south side of the piazza will be moved into the structure and the piazza will serve as the heart of the entertainment area with greater pedestrian access , landscaping , sculpture , and a water feature .
Circulation and flow will be improved with greater accessibility and connection between the parking area and the stores . Several existing stores will move into the spaces currently occupied by restaurants . A lift will bring shoppers directly from the parking into the piazza and the flow will be improved by adding an escalator back into the parking area , which will also drive traffic past large box stores (@ Home , Volpes and others ) as shoppers move towards the piazza .
In addition to the reconfiguration , the mall will be refurbished with new tiling , signage , increased greenery and upgraded ablution facilities . Construction commenced in September 2021 and the phased refurbishment is set to be completed within 18 months .
