ventilation . The linear concrete ‘ boxes ’ between the ventilated façades give the building its Art- Deco lines and a sense of verticality .
The long entrance façade is broken up using different rendered concrete ‘ boxes ’ including a ‘ green wall ’ which create interest and depth . These same ‘ box ’ forms are repeated in vertical form on the tower . The curved lines of the lower floors tie the building into the design of the landscaped park that will extend up to the Mall of Africa . The Precinct is permeable and open to pedestrian traffic - arriving at a central courtyard that will serve as the hub of activity . The Courtyard Hotel benefits from this common landscaped area inviting easy access to the hotel and its conference facilities .
The room matrix supplied by hotel group dictated the number of rooms on each floor as well as the split between double and twin rooms . Each twin room has an adjoining entrance to a double room , allowing the creation of family rooms .
Efficient water and electrical designs were implemented throughout . These include energy efficient lights and appliances as well as intelligent lighting management systems and building monitoring systems . There is an effective automated mechanism for monitoring water consumption data , which is able to perform as a leak detection system .
Sustainability The hotel recently achieved a 4 Star Green Star Custom Hotel v1 Design Rating . This is in line with the goal to have all buildings in The Nexus Waterfall precinct Green Star certified . Highlights of the rating include :
Indoor Environmental Quality was a priority and the design aims to optimise daylight and minimise potential healthy issues by specifying materials with a low VOC content and ensuring that all gaseous and fire suppression systems and thermal insulants used for the building have an Ozone Depleting Potential of zero .
