EDITORIAL
2021 is an exciting year for Architect and Builder Magazine . We are celebrating our 70th anniversary . Given the challenges to print media over the last year I am happy to say that we are still going strong , remain in print and are looking forward to celebrating a milestone I believe few other publications in SA have achieved . First published by Laurie Wale in 1951 , the back copies of the magazine provide a fascinating record of the rise of modern architecture in South Africa .
As much as we would like to publish a retrospective going back to the 1950 ’ s , the sheer number of issues and projects contained therein is just too vast to consider and do justice to over the course of the year . We will instead be publishing a series of 10-year retrospectives , from 2010 to 2020 , in the coming months . This curated series will feature a selection of stand out buildings in various categories .
We are also in the process of updating our website , which will soon include every project published over the last 10 years . Another aim is to slowly work backwards in time , eventually compiling a searchable database of projects going back over the decades which will make it the most comprehensive historical record of SA architecture available .

16 CINTOCARE HOSPITAL A specialist surgical facility located in the Menlyn Maine Precinct developed by Growthpoint Properties together with Cintocare .
28 BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE This Stellenbosch University research facility is on par with the most advanced and sophisticated biomedical research facilities in the world .
40 THE QUARTER The Quarter is situated in vibrant De Waterkant , which lies on the periphery of Cape Town ’ s CBD , Waterfront and Atlantic Seaboard .
50 ILLOVO CENTRAL Illovo Central is the second building to be developed by FWJK in the prominent Illovo Node , which is centrally located to both Sandton and Rosebank CBD ’ s .
58 PARK LANE WEST Park Lane West is a new commercial building situated centrally in Menlyn Maine , Pretoria designed by Boogertman + Partners .

70 FLAME STUDIOS The interior design demonstrates stellar creative direction by Tracy Lynch of Studio Lee Lynch and the Nando ’ s design programme .
