Design Principles Out of these objectives came some key design principles . Firstly the aim would be to ‘ make reference to and not restore ’. Whilst the building was historic and some earlier features were to be restored to their original iteration , this wasn ’ t to be an exercise to returning the building to what it looked like in the
1920 ’ s . The aim was to ensure the building was suitable for contemporary use within a sensitive approach to the historical bones of the building . Another key design principle was the use of a monochromatic base , which has become a signature element in the new design . The aim was to return a smart and elegant feel to the building , using the base palette as a starting point , especially in the key public and circulation areas .
The last design principle was to retain the building ’ s quirky personality . The Winchester Hotel has been family owned for generations and this instills an inherent story line and history
