NEW MARITIME SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE , DURBAN
The New Maritime School of Excellence finds a home in the heart of Durban . This new boarding school development will be the first of its kind in the province . A vision and dream that began some 13 years ago will finally come to reality , driven by passionate members of the Department of Education to bring a modern facility to students using the latest teaching technologies available to prepare students for tertiary education in the Maritime field .
The development has been divided into three zones - learning , boarding and sporting . These zones , although separate in use , have been carefully laid out to integrate with minimal disturbance to each other . The learning or classroom facilities are spread over two storey structures which overlook spacious courtyard spaces , creating an environment for social interaction between students and teachers . The Olympic size swimming pool and official size soccer field are separated by the school hall , thereby creating two separate sporting areas that can operate independently from each other at the same time .
The school hall will be used for indoor assembly , school concerts and possible general public use in the future as well indoor sports . Provision for teacher parking and controlled access and egress with a lighthouse themed gatehouse marks the main entrance to the school .
The boarding facility will house 400 students . This zone occupies the rear of the site away from the main road to provide some privacy to the students boarding . This facility will seek to address daily living functions of the students and to re-create a home away from home . The school dining hall forms part of the boarding facility along with laundry services and teacher accommodation , a full industrial kitchen and all the ancillary support required .
The facility will provide high tech teaching equipment and include a specialised computerised simulator room that allows students to simulate steering of different types of sea vessels .
