COMMENDATION: BRIDGE CATEGORY Isando Pedestrian Bridge The Isando Pedestrian Bridge, which won a commendation in the Bridge category, stands as a visible marker to the current efforts to overhaul and upgrade the freeways in and around Johannesburg. With a total length of 446 m, the bridge and its approaches connect the Isando PRASA Railway Station with the OR Tambo International Airport precinct. The bridge is well used by some 9 000 commuters crossing each day and replaces two footbridges that were built in the early 1970s. This is one of the largest pedestrian bridges built in South Africa. Representing the judges, Dennis Nash of the Joint Structural Division, said that the Isando Pedestrian Bridge has a very pleasing appearance with its shallow arched deck suspended from angled cables, all strung from slender angled columns. “The overall appearance is light and elegant,” he said. “Whilst the motorists hurtling under the bridge will not have time to appreciate the bridge, the judges were afforded the opportunity to see close at hand a well-designed and detailed bridge structure.” The client, Edwin Kruger, Bridge Network Manager at SANRAL concluded: “This bridge is really a magnificent landmark and is receiving favourable comments by the public. It fits very well in the surrounding area.” Developer/Owner: SANRAL Architect: GAPP Structural Engineer: SMEC South Africa Project Manager: SMEC South Africa Main Contractor: Raubex Steelwork Contractor: Vital Steel Cable Stressing: Amsteele Systems COMMENDATION: LSFB CATEGORY Lutheran Community Recreation C V
