he end of the year is almost upon us – at increasingly breakneck speed.
There are signs, in certain areas, of an improvement in the country’s
economy, so hopefully this will continue. We could all do with a
better 2014!
Shelley and I attended the Green Building Council of South Africa’s conference
in Cape Town recently and, amongst other things at this extremely well run
convention, we were thrilled to see our own Bruce Kerswill, Managing Director
of the Spire Property Group, elected Chairman of the World Green Building
Council – a great plaudit for South Africa and the GBCSA. The conference itself
highlighted how sustainability and ‘greening’ is no longer a question of ‘why?’
but ‘how?’ as the world recognises the necessity of implementing changes to
conserve our planet. With this in mind, we are so pleased to be continuing our
Green Watch features, in conjunction with the GBCSA, next year.

The 2013 Steel Awards are our main feature in this issue. The awards encompass
a wide range of buildings and projects. Although not reaching the numbers of the
2009 and 2010 entries, the projects submitted were of a very high calibre and the
judges were extremely impressed.
