SIR LOWRY SQUARE, WOODSTOCK, CAPE TOWN Developed by FWJK Developments, Sir Lowry Square is a new 25,000m² mixed-use development located on an island site bounded by Sir Lowry Road, Basket Lane, Russell and Francis Street in Woodstock, Cape Town. The development will comprise two levels of retail to be anchored by Pick n Pay totalling 6,500m² together with a 200 key hotel, 160 studio and one-bed apartments and an entire showroom floor where exotic and vintage cars will be stored and displayed. This part of Woodstock is undergoing significant gentrification and this development, with its easy access onto the Nelson Mandela Boulevard and great visibility and harbour outlook, will be a sought- after location for mixed-use retail and residential and will offer a vibrant residential lifestyle for millennials. According to lead design architect Darryn Botha of FWJK Architecture, Sir Lowry Square is a key catalyst for sensitive mixed- use type development along Sir Lowry Road that will become pivotal for future developments on the outskirts of the City Bowl towards Woodstock. The conceptual massing of the architecture is broken down and articulated in response to the finer grain of the surrounding context. The main façade of Sir Lowry Square is set back from the street edge thus creating a large terraced platform which facilitates the flow of pedestrian movement and enhances the public street edge which forms part of the gateway corridor into the City. The North East corner has been reduced in height to allow sunlight to penetrate the inner courtyard, hotel and apartments, whilst providing protection from the strong South Easterly winds. A void in the landscaped courtyard allows natural light to filter down into the retail space through a large triple volume atrium. Articulation of the vertical form through set backs reduces the visual scale of the building and creates platforms for the entertainment areas and rooftop terrace. Sir Lowry Square not only prides itself on its unique location, but also takes advantage as a corner site, with a grand off-street retail Project Watch entrance, fine dining and coffee shops along the front façade creating an interactive and engaging pedestrian street edge – all contributing towards forming a key node within the greater Woodstock Precinct. Commencement of construction will take place in the first quarter of 2020 and will be complete in the first quarter of 2022.
