As such, the project is also trying to retrofit suburbia (and creating more value); by making more housing typologies available and affordable (there are a number of innovative financial cross-subsidisation available). Hopefully this example will be the first of many in this country. It is not only appropriate regulations that deliver successful cities. Suitable architecture, good housing products as well as the quality of urban space-making (especially in compact environments) all contribute to successful cities. Buildings unify the streetscape as they greatly diversify the choices available for households of different ages, sizes and incomes. 18 Housing should be available and affordable to everyone – after all, the Constitution of South Africa states: Everyone has the right to have access to adequate housing.
