bridge onto a boat. Along with the scale of the water feature came the noise, making the space less desirable for staff to frequent or gather.
Taking this into account, KMH decided to reduce the extent of the water feature by creating multiple platforms for staff to pause while providing a more efficient route from the entrance lobby to the central atrium seating area. The design included steps and ramps, enabling SNP accessibility, which had previously been an issue. The water now trickles down the terrace in a controlled and considered manner, interacting with the pause platforms and spouts in places.
The Atrium Seating Area This area received an overhaul and acts as a revitalised extension of the canteen. It contains a variety of seating and workstation moments, wrapping around trees as well as freestanding tables and chairs. The six trees stand as feature placemaking moments and assist in breaking the atrium volume. They interplay with perforated sunscreens at the apex of the volume which creates dappled light on the floor, mimicking that of a tree canopy. Three large undulating arches are notable features and provide an accent of colour which complements the greenery in the space. The existing elevator core is clad with fluted tiles which reference the large monolithic columns of Greek temples. in the form of slatted feature walls which contain the Vodacom logo as a motif shining through. The central atrium space then acts as a blank canvas which can serve as a backdrop for multiple event opportunities.
Conclusion Drawing inspiration from classical elements, the reimagined atrium now reflects a timeless elegance described as a contemporary ruin. This transformation not only restores the atrium but also elevates it, creating a space that is both sophisticated and aligned with Vodacom HQ’ s architectural and corporate identity.
Corporate Identity Branding moments are intentionally absent in the main atrium space and are restricted solely to private lobby and breakout spaces. They manifest
