REVITALISING CAVENDISH SQUARE: A BOLD STEP TOWARDS FUTURE-FORWARD RETAIL DESIGN
The recent upgrades to Cavendish Square in Claremont, Cape Town, mark a transformative chapter in the mall’ s evolution, reasserting its status as one of South Africa’ s premier retail destinations. SVA Architects focused on the refurbishment of the public areas across three levels, the development combines sophisticated design, sustainability, and shopper-centric innovation to create a refined, functional and welcoming environment for visitors.
At the heart of the project is a series of striking architectural features that reimagine the shopping experience. Chief among them is a bespoke cellular ceiling system, crafted from plasterboard in an organic grid pattern and illuminated with integrated perimeter LED lighting. This ambient glow lends depth and visual rhythm to the space, making the mall feel both dynamic and serene. Complementing this are polished granite floors inlaid with brass detailing, mirrored columns to enhance perceived space in tighter areas, and timber-clad columns in maple and oak that introduce warmth and texture.
Functionality was equally prioritised. The design team carefully considered circulation flow and visual openness, ensuring a natural movement through the mall and reducing spatial congestion.
Lighting plays a central role, not just for visibility, but to elevate atmosphere, highlight architectural elements, and provide consistency across varied ceiling conditions.
While the refurbishment was implemented in phases, balancing progress with operational continuity, the outcomes have been transformative. Foot traffic has notably increased, especially to previously underutilised areas like the lower ground floor, now revitalised through smart design solutions such as mirrored columns and innovative lighting. These changes have dramatically improved user experience and spatial perception, reinforcing Cavendish Square as a vibrant and elegant retail hub.
Though some areas like the centre court and ablution facilities remain untouched in this phase, they are earmarked for future upgrades. A more unified mall experience is on the horizon, promising consistency in design and a seamless shopping journey.
With its thoughtful integration of aesthetics, function, and sustainability, Cavendish Square’ s redevelopment sets a new benchmark in retail design, one that honours the centre’ s heritage while embracing a more intelligent and inspiring future.
