SOL-TECH PLAASHUIS , PRETORIA
Sol-Tech Plaashuis , a new student residence designed to accommodate 400 students , embodies the essence of Pretoria-Regionalism through its architectural alignment with the nearby Sol-Tech College . Designed by Jeremie Malan Architects , this three-floor building is a modern adaptation of Third Vernacular architecture , blending local traditions with contemporary design . The façade ’ s earthy tones and textured surfaces create a visually cohesive structure that integrates seamlessly with its environment . The design emphasises student interaction , featuring
communal lounges and recreational spaces on each floor , along with central courtyards planted with indigenous flora , offering serene areas for relaxation and informal gatherings .
Incorporating sustainable design principles , Sol-Tech Plaashuis uses thermal mass in its walls to regulate indoor temperatures , complemented by strategically placed overhangs and crossventilation systems to enhance natural cooling . This approach minimises reliance on artificial climate control , promoting energy efficiency and comfort . Roof pitches are designed at 20 º for a solar installation and borehole water is used to feed toilets and irrigation . Heat pumps are to be used for water heating .
In summary , Sol-Tech Plaashuis is a model of contemporary student housing that balances functional design with environmental sustainability and community engagement . Its thoughtful integration of site constraints into the planning process ensures a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation , making it a significant addition to both the architectural landscape and student life .
