elements at ground level . I look at architectural photography as a process of building an image layer by layer , tying together multiple exposures from different times of day and introducing isolated pools of light to create depth and highlight important elements where necessary . In any form of photography , I have a fundamental appreciation for images that communicate something in a way that words cannot . This is the basis of why I am so passionate about photography as a visual language . To go beyond making a “ pretty image ” great photography purposefully incorporates elements that capture the feelings and ideas of the subject .
What is your favourite building to have shot and why ? I have shot three of the best hotels and lodges in the world , which were all incredible experiences because in addition to the world class architecture and interior design that went into their creation , they were also surrounded by abundant cultural depth and pristine wilderness . One of my favourites was actually one of the smallest structures that I have photographed - a very organically shaped , leaf thatched , wooden pole structure designed by LIFE architecture and interior design . Ngaga Camp nested beautifully into the dense rainforest of Odzala National Park in the Republic of Congo . The
company adapted traditional pigmy building techniques for their design which created these beautiful ventilated woven huts that I feel strongly enhanced the experience that the lodge was based around - which fundamentally is about engaging with nature .
What should architects consider when working with a photographer to ensure the best quality images ? Photography and architecture are both of course visual disciplines , so any communication highlighting important design elements will quickly guide a photographer to create more valuable compositions . Quality vs quantity is the same for photography as it is for design , and is always a balancing act that needs to be touched on for the best results . A list of the most important images to capture creates structure for a shoot and helps to keep things efficient . Think , what areas are you most proud of , what is unique and what will be most valuable to show to potential clients . I highly recommend a short on-site meeting or recce before the shoot day , as it allows for much more detailed briefings to happen naturally and gives the photographer an invaluable understanding of the effect the sun will have on the space throughout the day . www . simonwatsonimages . com
