Looking back at the thousands of projects that we have featured over the last 7 decades , I never fail to be impressed by the incredible design journey South Africa has been on . The 1950 ’ s really saw the emergence of modern architecture in our country , with architects taking groundbreaking risks with design and materials .

South African architecture has always punched above its weight , creating world class buildings . This is a great achievement considering the challenges each project often faces , but with challenge comes the need to innovate .

Looking at the award winners in this years Afrisam-Saia Sustainable Design Awards , it ’ s clear that innovation and creativity are abundant . When you are challenged by a difficult environment , a small budget or limited materials , you are forced to work harder and more creatively to achieve a design within those parameters .

Although the magazine has generally focused on large commercial projects , I do like to give exposure to small projects that are just as impressive in their own right . I will be providing more opportunities for projects like these in the future , so get in touch if you are working on something small but perfectly formed .

22 THE RIDGE , V & A WATERFRONT The Ridge was designed for global consulting giant Deloitte , which commissioned the building as its Cape Town regional office .

34 31 COMMERCE CRESCENT The building integrates into the new Commerce Crescent Design District while at the same time anchoring the northern corner of the precinct .

42 52 KATHERINE STREET The small land parcel on the corner of Katherine Street and Albertyn Road in Sandton has been transformed into a P-grade office development by Alchemy .

46 SANBS REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS The South African National Blood Service ( SANBS ) recently unveiled their new state-of-the-art facility in Mount Edgecombe , KwaZulu-Natal .

56 RADISSON RED , ROSEBANK Radisson Hotel Group , one of the world ’ s largest and most dynamic hotel groups , has opened its second Radisson RED in Africa .
