REWARDSCO 3 , UMHLANGA RIDGE
Following on from the successful completion of Rewardsco 2 the final phase of this development has been given the go ahead with construction teams moving on site from July 2021 .
Situated on the prominent south west corner of the site this final structure will be the 6th and final facility occupying the 29,000m 2 site owned by Zenprop Property Holdings .
Designed by Hilton Lawrence Architects , this building and the landscaped surrounds form a key part of the overall micro precinct . With Rewardsco planning to occupy approximately 60 % of the new 7,000m 2 facility , the strong visual link between all three of their facilities was critical . The corner site bounded by Umhlanga Rocks Drive and Ntusi Road also meant that the building footprint could wrap around the site boundary and deliver striking views back to the Indian Ocean on the south east corner . The increased height restriction also meant that an additional 4th Floor could be added .
Careful attention was paid to the design of the south east corner of the building as besides the sea views this façade also sits adjacent to the primary vehicle entrance onto the podium level . The glazed façade system with integrated white fins has been wrapped around this angle corner to ensure that all sides of the building offer something visually unique .
The final link bridge joining the new structure to Rewardsco 2 has also be included meaning that all three buildings occupied by Rewardsco now have an upper level link back to the central facilities building .
This final phase of the development means that the complete design intent of the landscaped gardens , pedestrian walkways , garden benches and water-features at podium level can now be realised . This green zone will offer staff and visitors multiple eating and seating opportunities with herringbone paved walkways criss-crossing over between the landscaped planters and water features .
Rewardsco 3 is aiming to achieve a 4 star Green Star SA rating to match the recently completed Rewardsco 2 facility .
CHAMBERS ATTORNEYS , POTCHEFSTROOM
18 Thabo Mbeki street will soon be the home address of Chambers Attorney ’ s head office in Potchefstroom , featuring their brand new office block with its modern industrial appeal to the public .
Designed by 1.618 Architecture , the design criteria for the building was to create a double storey office block that has an open connection to the public street that runs on the western façade of the building . The architects decided on an industrial appeal for the building that consist of a blend of red facebrick , black steel and off-shutter concrete . The open feel brought forward a few design challenges that needed to be addressed . Firstly , an open feeling can easily be created by making use of glass façades . This was introduced in the design , but the battle was only half won as the heat gain caused by using large glass panes needed to be addressed on the western façade . They decided to address this in a creative manner by making use of custom made laser cut panels that will screen off the harsh late afternoon sun rays but still allow for natural ventilation and light to pass through the screens , thus fulfilling a practical purpose as well as to add to the aesthetics of the façade .
For the interior they took a more contemporary approach with regards to the layout by designing an open plan office space instead of traditional cubicles . The interior is a reflection of the exterior and makes use of off-shutter concrete slab finishes blended in a colour scheme of black steel , red facebrick and warm timber tones to create an industrial interior for the occupants . Furthermore , the building will be equipped with a solar system that will supply at least 80 % of electricity required in order to reduce the electricity drawn from the grid and enables the building to be more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable , which the architects believe should always be considered as a prime design principle .
