YES4YOUTH HUBS TACKLE SKILLS AND WORK EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS
CKB . MDS Architecture has designed innovative community based hubs for the innovative Youth Employment Service ( Yes ) initiative at Alex Mall and Tembisa Mall in Gauteng as well as in Louwville , Western Cape . Yes4Youth is a pioneering , business-driven initiative which has partnered with the government and labour to tackle South African ’ s youth unemployment crisis and drive youth employability .
Aki Savva , a partner at CKB . MDS Architecture , says that the design of the hubs needed to facilitate short construction time frames , while incorporating attractive aesthetics into practical facilities .
Alex Mall The first CKB . MDS Architecture-designed hub opened in Alexandra , Gauteng in June 2019 after a construction period of just four months . The 1,300m 2 hub is just off the parking deck of Alex Mall in the heart of Alexandra and has been provided to Yes by the mall co-developers , McCormick Properties . The containers , sponsored by Nedbank and Netcare , provide the required space for the manufacture of PPE equipment for sale to Netcare for use in its hospitals as well as to other buyers .
Says Savva , “ Voids between the containers are encased in glass , creating interesting rhythm and allowing the containers to serve as attractive backdrops for sponsor branding . Timber decking brings warmth and texture to the structure , creating an attractive restaurant space using donated equipment . The architecture is unassuming and honest , punctuated by details such as steel for an upmarket , industrial feel and timber for warmth and interest ,” says Savva .
Besides Alex Mall , Yes4Youth hubs are also located in Louwville , near Saldahna Bay and at Thembisa Mall , another McCormick Properties development .
“ The initiative is an innovative and fresh solution-based approach to tackling unemployment in South Africa , so it is important that the design of Yes hubs reflects these characteristics .
