within to experience expansive views as well as access the glass elevators and glazed stairwell . From a design perspective the atrium was considered as an ‘ outside space ’ that has been enclosed . The glazing is as large in dimension as it could be whilst still taking structural and thermal elements into consideration . Although the atrium design does not allow for an expansive horizontal line of sight upon entry , the eye is immediately drawn upwards to the glass elevators and the striking ceiling design that serves as a strong visual element . Expanding on the idea that the new building is almost ‘ stranded on the original shore ’ the ceiling of the atrium has a curved , rippling water design speaking to the shoreside location .
The wall of the atrium is supported by offshutter concrete columns designed to obstruct the visual expansiveness of the space as little as possible .
The light filled ground floor reception area , flows directly off the Dock Road pedestrian entrance , where a simple yet distinctively striated white marble reception desk greets visitors . A tiered timber clad ceiling with integrated lighting above warms the space . The elegant white marble clad walls and floors are balanced with strong black accents of vertical timber panelling and an inlayed carpeted waiting area with rich colour accents of burgundy and cream . The more intimate lower reception area leads through security lines into a dramatic full height atrium with glass scenic lifts that showcases extensive views through the full glass façade .
Conclusion 14 Dock Road is the latest addition to the V & A Waterfront and the Canal Precinct that achieves the goal of creating a striking visual link with the Cape Town CBD .
