The St John ’ s Preparatory campus is a well known educational landmark situated on the Houghton Ridge in Johannesburg . Designed by Herbert Baker and Frank Fleming , and with the foundation stone being laid in 1907 , the classic school buildings have been enjoyed by all who have attended the school , the teachers and those who have appreciated their architectural significance as they have driven past over the decades .
The original buildings nestle sensitively into the ‘ koppie ’, perfectly taking into consideration the sense of space within the natural surrounds . Due to the historical importance of the buildings , any new development proposals have been carefully scrutinised by the city ’ s Heritage Committee and only approved by the school after undergoing an extensive collaborative process .
