In a moving acceptance speech Mpahlwa told of his pursuit of architecture against all odds, including a period of incarceration as a political prisoner on Robben Island and exile in Germany where he completed his studies - going on to become one of the first black architects in the country. The incoming president reflected on his 40 years involvement with architecture and the challenges the country faced during apartheid, where the access to KNAUF INSULATION LAUNCHES CEILING ROLL (MULTI PACK) Knauf Insulation has responded to local demand for a competitively priced non-combustible (SANS 10177 parts 5 and 10 A/A1) insulation with the launch of Ceiling Roll (Multi Pack), which offers better thermal performance than PET (polyester) insulation. Thanks to Knauf Insulation’s unique compression technology, a single roll of Ceiling Roll (Multi Pack) insulation contains as much as 32.4m 2 of 50mm insulation. Ceiling Roll (Multi Pack) is a two-in-one Glass Mineral Wool insulation roll designed to offer installers maximum flexibility. Each pack provides a total length of 27m. This can be achieved by splitting the roll, without the need for tools, into two layers, each 50mm deep. Alternatively, the roll can be installed at 100mm depth to provide 13.5m of insulation. The rolls can easily be cut to suit joist centres. “We developed Ceiling Roll (Multi Pack) specifically for the needs of installers and homeowners in South Africa” explained Mark Gillott, Business Development Director for Knauf Insulation Africa. “It’s affordable, quick and easy to install. And with more product per pack than standard Glass Mineral Wool rolls or polyester packs, installers can transport far more in a single trip, need less storage space, and have less fetching and carrying to do around the job site.” Mark added: “Ceiling Roll (Multi Pack) offers better thermal properties than PET, meaning that homeowners who use air conditioning need less energy to maintain a cool home, while those without air conditioning can slow down the rate of heat gain during the day. Ceiling Roll (Multi Pack) has a Euroclass A1 non-combustible reaction to fire classification and is also certified under local SANS 10177 parts 5 and 10 A/A1 for fire. Ceiling Roll (Multi Pack) is manufactured using ECOSE® Technology, Knauf Insulation’s patented sustainable bio-based binder that contains no added phenol or formaldehyde. As a result, products made using ECOSE® Technology are odourless and softer to touch. They are 70% less energy intensive than mineral wool products made using traditional formaldehyde-based binders, further reducing their ecological footprint. Ceiling Roll (Multi Pack) and Combi Cut Ceiling Roll are available through Knauf Insulation’s trade stockist UBS (Unlimited Building Supplies). www.knauf-insulation.co.za/products/ceiling-roll-multi-pack archi- tecture and engineering careers was previously determined on racial grounds. He rallied the gathered architecture community to acknowledge the challenges the profession faces and pledged to use his term in office to work hard at rebuilding the respect the profession deserves and encourage interest among young professionals. Mpahlwa said, ‘The architectural profession needs to be regarded as a key player within the built environment professions and architects need to play their role in reshaping the spatial dynamics of our country and our built environment in general’. www.saia.org.za 6 News Watch
