A
lthough my family have only been involved in the publishing of
Architect and Builder since 2000, we have been lucky to have been
bequeathed back copies of the magazine dating back to 1951 by the
family of the founder, Laurie Wales. As you can imagine, nearly 70
years of back copies fill up a lot of boxes and some have not been

[email protected] opened for years. As much as they take up a lot of space, these magazines are a
ACCOUNTS Scheltema Roofing, Eagle Lighting and Crabtree that are still well known brands within
printed history of post war South African architecture and are fascinating to page
through. Looking at the retro adverts it’s interesting to come across companies like

the industry today.
Visually the magazine may have
come a long way since those days,
but paging through this historical
record I am more convinced than

the façade fabricator on Gateway, one of the award winning projects, was
incorrectly listed. The façade fabricator was in fact Alania. Apologies for the error.
