The existing Mediclinic Stellenbosch previously situated in die Boord, has for many years stood Stellenbosch in good stead, but with an ever expanding population and increased demand on health services, it was decided to relocate the main hospital to a new, larger site, and retain the existing building exclusively for orthopedic services. The new multi-disciplinary hospital was developed for Mediclinic (Pty) Ltd by Atterbury Property Investments and will enable the delivery of a more comprehensive medical service to the greater Winelands community. Rising from the foot of the Hottentot Holland mountains, this multi-storey, state of the art facility, designed by TV3 Architects, has a total capacity of 95 beds (excluding the day clinic 20 beds). It boasts a 24/7 Emergency unit, 3 surgical theatres and 31 on site specialist consulting rooms. In addition, the main hospital is co-located with the 20 bed Mediclinic Stellenbosch Day Clinic, supported by 2 operating theatres. Looking towards the future, the hospital will have the ability to expand to 160 beds and a total of 6 theatres. This development is unique in the way that the new hospital will function closely with the old hospital, which will now be known as Mediclinic Winelands Orthopedic Hospital, and will now in turn collaborate with the Institute of Orthopedics and Rheumatology (IOR), a specialist institute dedicated to orthopedics and rheumatology.
