SOUTH ELEVATION
The north-south orientation of the building
allows for maximum light and big window openings
that will allow patients to be close to nature, which
has been shown to boost to patient recovery. Solar
treated glass was used to assist with patient
privacy and minimise heat gain.

The rectangular ward design, according to
Mediclinic, limits the distance between the
central nurses station in each unit to patient
beds, it also maximises patient privacy while
retaining accessible and functional flow for the
patients care.
The custom lightweight roof structure is
composed of roof insulation, white roof sheeting,
to optimise roof temperature, using less
energy. Solar treated glazing and sun screening
devices on the façade, reflects heat away from
the building.
Sustainability
Special cognisance was taken to include
sustainable design systems that will lessen the
buildings impact on the environment, and reduce
long term running costs. With recent pressures
on Western Cape water resources, a water-
wise design was high on the agenda during and
after the construction phase. Potential water
use by the hospital is lessened by using water
wise landscaping.
The brief for the Engineers was to produce
enhanced, cost- effective, environmentally
friendly and proactive engineering solutions
and designs. The professional team used
Revit, a state of the art computer aided design
software, to produce complete and coordinated
designs down to detailed room data sheet level.
In terms of energy conservation, the mechanical
and electrical systems use the latest technology
for optimum efficiency.
Electrical
• The entire lighting installation was done with
highly efficient LED Light fittings.
• Lighting control in the form of occupancy sensors
were used in low usage areas.
• There is an 450kVA essential generator backing
up the critical theatre and hospital loads where
the 550kVA non-essential generator back up less
important services.
• State of the art data network was installed
throughout the entire hospital ensuring
the hospital is future proof for technology
to come.
Water
• All domestic water heating will be done with
heat pumps, solar and heat reclaim systems.
