he Houghton Hotel, a new 5-star hotel located overlooking the Houghton Golf
Course, provides a leafy suburban hotel experience whilst still being close to
Sandton and the Johannesburg CBD.
Client Brief
The brief to project architects Boogertman + Partners was to design a 180 key 5-star
hotel which would incorporate all the services you would expect at this level. The brief
also required an 800m 2 conference facility capable of supporting 550pax, business
lounge, spa, gym, on-site laundry and various dining experiences. The hotel had to
stand out as the gem of the development and at the same time form the final piece
connecting two residential wings which house apartments on either end. Together
with this a phased basement on either side of the hotel had to link to the new hotel
basements, therefore creating a super basement which would allow access from end
to end of the development.
Site
The hotel is situated on 168 acres of private secure parkland/golf course which is unique
to the middle of Johannesburg. There is an underground water system running through
the site which feeds the golf course dams. The drop of 8m from the southern edge
of the site to the northernmost edge has been utilised in the design to minimise the
impact of service plant and parking on the site and maximise the focus of views toward
the parkland and city scape in the distance.
