PROJECT FEATURE NETCARE CHRISTIAAN BARNARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL T he Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital (CBMH) was originally located in the centre of the Cape Town City Bowl and is one of the oldest private hospitals in Cape Town. The hospital prides itself as a centre of excellence in cardiac services and transplantation. The hospital is described as ‘super specialised’ and this is best defined by comparison: A building audit revealed that renovating the existing building was simply not viable. The risks and challenges of completing major renovations on a 17-storey building, whilst still running a busy hospital, were significant. After considering the significant advantages of a new build in terms of flow, space utilisation, efficiency, technology, future growth & sustainability, Netcare decided to relocate in November 2009. • A conventional 250 bed start-up hospital requires approximately 20,000m2 and typically comprises of 5 to 6 theatres, 20 ICU/HCU beds, 10 NNICU cots and 35 medical doctors and specialists. • CBMH is a 248 bed ‘super specialised’ hospital accommodated in approximately 28,000m2 and comprises 11 theatres, 2 cardiocatherisation laboratories, 61 specialised beds and 110 medical doctors and specialists. Site Selection One of the conditions set by the Department of Health was that the new hospital had to be located within the City Bowl, and after extensive consultation, 36 sites were considered. Three sites were shortlisted and eventually the Foreshore on the corner of Rue Bartholomew Diaz and DF Malan streets emerged as the single favoured site. RENOVATE OR RELOCATE The project started in July 2007 when a mandate was received to investigate whether Netcare should renovate or relocate the hospital. The existing hospital was built in 1969 as a commercial building and was never originally designed as a hospital but converted into one 26 years ago. Location Situated on Erf 247 and located on Cape Town’s Northern Foreshore, the site is one of a number of new developments to have taken place in the Roggebaai precinct during recent years, with all having significantly contributed to the gradual improvement of the area.
