I
n order to create a successful space for the new Zimmer Biomet
headquarters in Waterfall, the designers at PLAE Interiors had
to immerse themselves in the Zimmer culture wholeheartedly.
As a leading medical device manufacturer, Zimmer Biomet was
adamant about steering away from an uninviting and clinical
environment and instead embracing their corporate culture and
improving employees’ wellbeing by paying careful attention to
the spaces they occupy daily. The interior had to reflect creativity,
encourage collaboration, and promote knowledge sharing
between different divisions. They inspired the PLAE Interiors
design team by their willingness to explore unconventional
thinking regarding office interiors.
Design Concept
The design concept included a number of key aspects that were
repeated throughout the building. Offices portrayed a clean and
fresh aesthetic while incorporating elements of fun in the form
of custom wallpaper design and wall graphics.
The timeless base palette was aligned with neutral colours and
textures to prevent premature dating, and in turn, major alterations
in the future. Natural timbers are used in furniture and architectural
elements to soften the industrial look of the interiors.

Space Planning
PLAE Interiors worked closely with Empowered Spaces
Architects to develop a space plan over two floors covering
approximately 1,800m².
The reception and client-facing areas such as the main
boardroom, training room and canteen are centrally situated
close to the main entrance into the building and the staircase,
making these facilities easily accessible to visitors without
intruding on quieter office areas.
The staff canteen has the flexibility to be turned into a
multifunctional space. With the addition of folding stacking
doors, the space is able to transform into a larger area when
more space for bigger groups of people is required. The
proximity of the bar and kitchen becomes a much desired
breakaway area during long training sessions. Zimmer
Biomet’s warehouse conveniently leads directly off the
office building.
In the office space, which consists of a combination of closed
offices and open plan, managers are strategically positioned
