previously popular. Although Time Square Casino
has no overtly ‘themed’ items apart from the
impressive entrance portal or subtle clock-face
in the carpet design, every element there has a
reference to Time.
The design concept was based on different
dimensions derived from Time as a principle, as
opposed to a theme. These dimensions were
then applied to the different areas, each with very
specific parameters of design complexity.
In this way there is a gradual build-up of
excitement as you move through the Casino -
starting from the basements/exterior, passing
through the circulation areas and finally ending
on the gaming floor. Colours change from
monochromatic blacks and greys to a colourful
explosion on the gaming floor through slot
machines, carpet and overhead lighting; patterns
evolve from one dimensional linear forms to
intricate layered patterns. For example, the trellis
pattern is a development of the mathematical
representation of the 5th Dimension. This is
repeated in many forms, from carpet designs,
shopfitting, wallpaper, decorative screens,
decals and signage. Similarly, the ceiling design
and floor patterns are segmented and change
rhythmically, as a reminder that you are moving
through space and time.
Every item is custom made for purpose - from
the hard finishes and shopfitting, to the carpets,
the lighting, the gaming tables, staff uniforms,
down to the glass in your hand. For LYT’s Interior
Design division it is one of the most design
Time Square
intensive projects you could ever hope to work
on. What made it more incredible, was that LYT
could approach it from both an Architectural and
an Interior perspective. The real magic happens
when you move past the restriction of separated
skill sets and design becomes the only driver.
