This is an incredibly exciting issue for us! We are, as always, featuring the 2016 SAPOA Awards but, to make this even more thrilling, we are recipients of a SAPOA Award ourselves! Architect & Builder, in our second year of entering, is the winner of the Property Publication of the Year category. It is a great honour to have our small team’ s work recognised in this way and we believe this acknowledgement is a testament to the dedication and hard work we put in as well as the quality of the projects we feature. The recipients of the other awards are highlighted in our lengthy SAPOA Awards feature and a huge congratulations to all of them as they go a long way to making our jobs easier with their expertise, creativity and international-quality work.
Our other features are no-less brilliant. Mall of Africa, in Midrand, is close to 130,000m 2 GLA and it is South Africa’ s largest single-phase shopping centre. The new 2,800m ² I & J Ocean Exhibit and Functions Venue at the Two Oceans Aquarium, V & A Waterfront, is the first major addition to the aquarium since it opened in 1995. This proved to be a job filled with many challenges but it successfully opened to the public in June this year.
Our next project is The Lion Match Company head office in one of Durban’ s first settled areas, the historic Point Precinct. The iconic headquarters include a five storey, 5,000m ² mixed use development made up of a 2,000m ² distribution warehouse, corporate offices, retail space and covered parking. Our final project is 35 Ferguson, Illovo, the new head office for Regiments, a leading development firm.
Our regular Interiors section features new interiors for Johnson and Johnson, Cape Town.
In the excitement over our SAPOA win, I have not even mentioned the recent municipal elections which produced a few surprises, not least of all for the embattled ruling party. Despite still garnering the majority of support from the electorate, it seems the public is demanding that our government makes some changes. I wait to see what happens with great interest.
