MUXIMA SHOPPING CENTRE
LUANDA, ANGOLA
Earthworks is nearing completion on a
single level 26,000m2 shopping centre in
the Viana district of Luanda, Angola which
is expected to be completed by late 2017.
The building was designed by South African
practice MDS Architecture.
John Williamson, MDS Architecture’s
partner heading up the project, says that
the building features a double volume space
with cinemas on the upper level as well as
a video arcade, family entertainment area
and food court. “The area has a dearth of
evening entertainment facilities, so Muxima
is expected to be very popular,” he says.
The design of the shopping centre is
contemporary and boasts a double-level
almond shape as a central feature. “We have
ensured an abundance of natural light in the
building and included striking entrances using
reconstituted panel that look like timber for
warmth and interest. The interior feature
mobiles hanging from interesting ceilings
for interest,” he explains.
In the long term, it is envisaged that a
World Trade Centre will be situated behind
the shopping centre, as well as a large 15
storey residential apartment development.
There is an existing value retail facility across
the street from the site and the area includes
schools, residential properties and industrial
development. The site is extremely visible
to the high volumes of traffic.
