Walls are finished in a traditional Cape Blend brick from Corobrik. The simple finish of the brick has remained unplastered, and evokes a rustic feel, whilst adding texture and warmth. Painted elements are finished in a warm grey, which contrasts very well with the steel and brick elements. Heavy timber beams with heavy metal straps are kept exposed and add the final element to the paired back agriculturally inspired palette and textures for the façade.
A pedestrian link that ends with a prominent white gabled entrance focal point was created on the Western side of the site, which faces Paarl Gimnasium, drawing in families into the centre after school and weekend sports matches. After some shopping, the central courtyard with its expansive timber deck under the trees, is an inviting space to enjoy a meal and meet up with friends. The carefully thought through hard landscaping and water features create elements of interest with varied floor finishes that include decking, cobbling and laterite. On-ground parking is softened by extensive planting and pergola elements.
Conclusion Optenhorst Village stands out for its attention to detail. Working from an extensive original concept originated by the development team, this has been brought to life by the architecture that provides Paarl North with a welcoming retail destination and social hub whilst still retaining a connection with the history of the centuries old town and its land.
