If we look at ‘classical dance’ as
performing arts and place them
on one end of the performance
spectrum, then ritual dance seems
to be on the opposite end.
From performing for the divine
spirits in Surakarta, to the ways the
devadasis blur spatial patterns and
audience configurations in temple
settings, the ritual dances of both
Kaveri delta region and central Java
resonate closer with elements of
performance art.
